Thomas was another phenomenal Belgian guitar player who died too early in He had a be-bop-ish, lyrical style like Tal Farlow. Thomas' influence on Catherine is obvious and I think that calling this album "Guitar Groove" is meant to be a humble and well-deserved homage to Rene Thomas. Very well /5(3).

On the album we are presenting you today (Mr. B) you’ll find Dutch recordings (recorded in and released in ). This rare gem of an album is comprised out of tracks written by some of the top jazz composers of all time (Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, David Brubeck, etc.) and played meticulously by Baker and his all-star line-up trio.

Acoustic duets between Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine – recorded with a style that's much more intimate and personal than some of the previous recordings by either player! Although Coryell first rose to fame at the end of the 60s with his fuzzy approach to jazz fusion, he's clearly mellowed here nicely with age – and has a nice sense of space and color, that's only further.

Multi-tracking himself on two (and sometimes more) guitars, with some occasional subtle processing to broaden the landscape, Catherine winds his way through eight originals, alongside tunes by John Lewis, Guinga, Nicolas Fiszman and longtime Django Reinhardt musical partner Stephane Grappelli.

Philip Catherine stands up to Larry Coryell and the interplay is exquisite. They each accompany each other beautifully, while each takes the lead with fire and grace. "Gloryell" a song by Jimmy Webb, is quite possibly the most beautiful few minutes of guitar ever recorded (well, maybe not, but it is GORGEOUS!)/5(5).
